Eclectic Home: Tin Can Planter

Growing up, my grandpa and father both had huge gardens.  Every day during summer we'd go out and water the plants, and come fall our table would groan under bushels and baskets full of green beans, peas, carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, spinach, and peppers.

Now that I'm living in an apartment, I don't have a yard where I can grow vegetables, but I still want to grow things.  Hence this planter!  It's small enough to fit in my window, incredibly customizable and easy to make cute, and since it's tin, even if my cat knocks it over, it won't break.  You also get to feel like an earth-conscious hippie (even if you aren't), because you can reuse a can instead of throwing it away!  Below are some basic instructions; use your own taste and style to make a cute planter of your own!

Tin Can Planter

You Need:
Tin can
Paint
Mod Podge
Dirt
Plant
Small dish
Awl or nail

1.  Empty and clean your can.  I recommend rinsing it out and then running it through your dishwasher (be sure heated dry isn't on, or it could burn you if you remove it from the dishwasher immediately!).
2.  Using an awl or nail, punch some holes in the bottom of the can.  This'll help prevent over-watering of your little baby plant.
3.  Lay out some newspapers and paint your can!  I recommend planning out your design first, unless you really want to freehand it.  Let your planter dry between coats.
4.  Use Mod Podge over your design to keep the paint on forever.  I'd recommend 2-3 coats Mod Podge.  Again, let your planter dry between coats.
5.  Insert your dirt and your plant.  Congratulations, you're done!

Variations:
Wrap fabric scraps around your can and Mod Podge for a cute patterned planter.
Get some magazines and scissors and decoupage.
Use metallic spray paint for a brass/copper/golden planter.
